A Brief History

The roots of screen printing stretch as far back as 960-1279 AD in China during what is known as the Song Dynasty. Later the practice spread and was adopted in other Asian countries. As the technique branched out across the continent it was expanded upon, adapted, and honed. The general acceptance of screen printing in Western Europe did not come until the late 18th century, early 19th century. Once silk to create meshes became more readily available by trade, and a profitable outlet for screen printing was realized- the future of industrial screen printing was set in motion!
In the 1930’s the word “Serigraphy” was coined by a group of artists who founded the National Serigraphic Society. They created this word to differentiate screen printing as an artform from its industrial and commercial applications. Serigraphy is a combination of the Latin word for silk “sericum” and “graphein” the Greek word meaning “to write or draw.” Andy Warhol is credited for popularizing screen printing as a creative artform in the 1960’s.

Benefits of Screen Printing

Screen printing provides for several benefits. Dense and even color distribution and a wide range of vivid colors make screen printing a popular choice. Screen printing is ideal for spot color applications on a wide range of materials and surfaces, and with special inks there is exceptional UV and hard coat protection.

How Screen Printing Works

Signs, banners, clothing, we see the products of screen printing around us daily, but how does it really work? Screen printing is a method of printing similar to using a stencil or a stamp to reproduce an image. Meshes, or screens, are created with a sheet of synthetic polymer, like nylon, tightly mounted across a frame. The screen must be stretched to an acceptable degree of tension, then a stencil is created by blocking out the negative image of the design. The mesh and frame are then press-processed to create a perfect reproduction of the desired image.

The material receiving the design is commonly referred to as the pallet. The pallet is prepared for printing, and then the magic happens. The mesh is and pallet are ultimately prepared for the final application of ink. The mesh is carefully fitted on top of a substrate, then the screen is filled with ink. The operator then pulls the ink down with a squeegee. As the squeegee passes, the tension of the mesh pulls it up and away from the substrate. Additional colors in a design are applied through this process with another layer of ink and another mesh. Finally, the end-product is run through a large dryer to cure the inks. Voilà! You have a high-quality, professional print

Uses & Benefits of Screen Printing

Screen printing is most often seen on clothing, but there are many other applications in which the benefits of screen printing thrive. Screen printing produces high-quality images, and a professional look. Just a few other common uses are banners, signs, and nearly any surface of metal, glass, plastic, or fabric. The screen printing method is generally best employed for large quantity orders because custom meshes must be created for each design. That mesh can then be used to produce a high volume of prints. Due to the nature of the screen printing process multiple designs will requires multiple custom meshes which will proportionately increase the cost. Screen printing is best used for less complex designs and is not recommended to reproduce photos. The size of the printed design can be limited by the size of mesh that can be created. Screen printing is perfect for textiles because the ink clings to the fibers in the fabric. The ink can withstand being washed many times once it has been cured.
