Prioritize the copy

We’ll organize the primary copy text so that it reads in order of importance. Sign text cannot be read all at once so the designer must serve up the copy in order of importance. While prioritizing the primary and secondary sign text, minimize unnecessary copy by deleting it altogether or sizing it smaller and pushing it away from the visual center. The result of good prioritization is that low priority text will not suck the life out of your sign’s key message.

Emphasize the primary message

If the reader has only a split second to view your sign, she will see a message that has strong copy, so keep primary copy strong with placement, size, weight, color and contrast. Also, design the primary words into a single unit by carefully choosing the typeface and kerning or moving the letters to make the words fit into a unit so that the eyes and mind reads the words as a unit.
